Lami's Leap: Celebrating Fiji's 10th Town!

Lami’s Journey: From Petition to Township Recognition

On March 2, 1977, the Fiji Times highlighted the significant recognition of Lami as Fiji’s 10th town, a development announced by the then Minister for Urban Development, Mohammed Ramzan. This achievement came after nearly a decade of persistent efforts that began in 1969 with a petition advocating for Lami’s establishment as a township.

The proclamation event drew hundreds of residents at the Lami shopping center, where Mr. Ramzan encouraged the community to take pride in their new status and collaborate to foster Lami’s growth. Esteemed individuals, including Suva’s Mayor, Cr Joape Rokosoi, and other city councillors, joined the celebration, reinforcing the town’s importance to the region.

In a gesture that acknowledged the contributions of the Suva Rural Local Authority, a minute book commemorating the new town was presented. Local artist Peni Vuniceva contributed to the festivities by displaying one of his artworks, while Reverend Nemani Cakacaka led a prayer that enhanced the celebratory mood.

The recognition of Lami parallels other urban development initiatives across Fiji, notably the plans for Navua to become the nation’s 14th town. Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa has emphasized ongoing infrastructure enhancements aimed at improving the quality of life in these emerging communities. The government’s commitment to investing in such local endeavors signals dedication to fostering vibrant centers of commerce and cultural identity.

The establishment of Lami as a town in 1977 stands as a testament to community commitment and cooperative progress. This milestone not only benefitted Lami but also sets the stage for broader advancements throughout Fiji, reflecting hope and potential for continued development in the region.
