LAMI High School participated with two teams in the Hibiscus Touch Rugby tournament, which wrapped up at Albert Park in Suva yesterday. This initiative reflects the school’s commitment to a holistic approach to education, emphasizing that sports should not be seen merely as extra-curricular activities.

Principal Naisa Cama expressed the belief that sports constitute a co-curricular activity and represent potential career paths for students. Building upon the success of their under-19 rugby team in the Deans competition, the school is eager to provide opportunities for students to excel in various sports. “We are involving our children in all kinds of sports. We were invited to take part in this competition, so we are encouraging kids who are interested in pursuing a career in this field,” Cama shared.

In addition to rugby, Lami High School plans to engage in cricket and off-season rugby league during the first term next year, ensuring that athletic pursuits complement academic efforts. Students are encouraged to attend holiday classes in preparation for their games, and the school is also conducting night classes with the goal of achieving a 100 percent pass rate this year.

Cama emphasized the importance of inclusive education, stating, “We must meet the child at the point of their need.” The school aims to engage students in meaningful activities amid concerns about rising drug use among teenagers in Fiji. “There are many social issues, particularly the fight against drugs among youth, so we provide various platforms for our students to divert from these challenges,” he noted.

He added that engaging in sports gives students motivation to utilize their talents and explore career opportunities. Looking ahead, Cama highlighted plans for 2025, which include establishing a girls’ rugby team for the Raluve competition and potentially forming an Under-18 Dean team, contingent on having sufficient student interest.
