Lal Challenges Minister: Are Drug Traffickers the Only Focus for Justice?

Opposition MP Virendra Lal has criticized Minister for Women and Children and Social Protection, Lynda Tabuya, for her suggestion to impose the death penalty for drug trafficking, arguing that stronger penalties are more necessary for crimes such as rape. Lal acknowledged that drug traffickers contribute to social issues in Fiji but questioned why the focus is primarily on them.

As the Shadow Minister for Women, Lal stated he cannot support the Minister’s comments, emphasizing that there are more severe crimes like rape that require harsher punishments. He highlighted the long-lasting emotional and psychological impact on victims, who often suffer for life while perpetrators receive minimal consequences.

Lal posed the question of why a rape victim should endure ongoing trauma, struggling to trust others, only to see their offender released after serving a short sentence. He pointed out that such situations leave victims in a constant state of fear.

He urged that the Minister should focus on addressing deeper issues rather than making reactive statements. Lal proposed a review of existing laws to ensure that serious offenders face life imprisonment, advocating for enhanced social protections for women and children in Fiji.
