Illustration of Women Representation Needed: Nawalowalo

Lack of Women Representation in Provincial Council Meetings on Kadavu Island

Kadavu Women representative Salote Nawalowalo highlighted the need for increased women representation in provincial council meetings during the Kadavu Provincial Council meeting in Suva yesterday.

She expressed her concerns about the disparity in decision-making processes due to the lack of female presence at these meetings.

“To sit in a meeting that concerns the welfare of individuals back on the island, it saddens me that women are not there to voice their opinions and concerns,” said Ms Nawalowalo.

“There are only two women here, and there are a lot of districts in Kadavu, but fewer women to uphold positions in crucial decision-making.”

Ms Nawalowalo emphasized the rising issues concerning women and her concern for the welfare of women in rural communities.

She noted that when women are absent from village meetings, their perspectives, concerns, and needs are often overlooked.

“This can lead to decisions that do not adequately address issues important to women, such as healthcare, education, and economic opportunities,” she said.

“Without women’s participation, decisions made in these meetings may not be truly representative of the entire community.”

She believes women bring unique insights and experiences that can enhance balanced and effective decision-making processes.

“There could be various reasons why women are not attending these meetings, such as cultural norms, lack of awareness, lack of transportation, or even exclusionary practices. Addressing these barriers is essential to ensuring equal participation.”
