Illustration of Women Representation Needed: Nawalowalo

Lack of Female Representation in Kadavu Provincial Council Meetings: Concerns Raised by Women Representative

A call for increased women’s representation in provincial council meetings was made by Kadavu Women representative Salote Nawalowalo during the Kadavu Provincial Council meeting in Suva. Nawalowalo highlighted the significant differences in decision-making that arise due to the low presence of women.

“It saddens me that women are not there to voice their opinions and concerns in meetings that concern the welfare of individuals back on the island,” Nawalowalo said. She noted the presence of only two women at the council meeting despite the many districts in Kadavu and expressed concern over the lack of female participation in crucial decision-making roles.

Nawalowalo raised issues affecting women in rural communities, emphasizing that their absence in village meetings often leads to their perspectives, concerns, and needs being overlooked. “This can lead to decisions that do not adequately address issues that are important to women, such as healthcare, education, and economic opportunities,” she explained. Without women’s participation, the decisions made may not truly represent the entire community, Nawalowalo added.

She stressed that women bring unique insights and experiences to the table, contributing to more balanced and effective decision-making processes. Nawalowalo pointed out various potential barriers to women’s participation in these meetings, including cultural norms, lack of awareness, transportation issues, and exclusionary practices. Addressing these barriers is essential to ensuring equal participation.
