Labour Party Demands Accountability Over Controversial Appointment

The Fiji Labour Party has stated that if the Commission of Inquiry into the appointment of Barbara Malimali finds that the process was manipulated, then the appointment should be annulled and those responsible must face consequences.

In a statement, former Prime Minister and FLP Leader Mahendra Chaudhry emphasized, “If the inquiry determines that the process was improperly conducted and was designed to achieve a predetermined outcome, then it must be rejected.”

Chaudhry’s comments were in response to the Prime Minister’s recent assertion that, “We cannot change the decision, we cannot change the process.”

He stressed the importance of maintaining the integrity of independent constitutional offices to foster public confidence.

Additionally, Chaudhry highlighted that the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption serves as a watchdog against corruption and must not be subjected to dubious appointment processes.

“There should be no exceptions to this principle of good governance,” he remarked.
