Labour officers from the Ministry of Employment will be conducting visits to all businesses operated by the Grace Road Group (GRG) as part of ongoing inspections regarding alleged violations of labour laws. Minister for Employment, Agni Deo Singh, confirmed that the inquiry aims to investigate specific claims against GRG, although he did not disclose the details of these alleged breaches.

Minister Singh indicated that the investigation would take time due to the number of locations the officers need to assess. He emphasized that if violations are confirmed, appropriate actions will be taken according to the labour laws of Fiji, ensuring that legislation is applied uniformly across all companies.

In response, Grace Road Group questioned the validity of the minister’s earlier statements regarding the inspections, noting they had not received any formal notification about the alleged breaches. GRG highlighted its employment of over 800 local staff and its commitment to hiring a diverse workforce, including many young people and women, to promote gender equality and foster economic growth within local communities.

The company stated its dedication to adhering to all relevant laws and expressed a willingness to collaborate with the Ministry of Employment to address any public concerns surrounding its operations.

This situation brings to light the importance of compliance with labour laws and the role of government oversight in ensuring fair practices within businesses. It also highlights Grace Road Group’s commitment to social responsibilities, including job creation and gender equality.

In summary, the upcoming visits by labour officers reflect a proactive approach by the Ministry of Employment to uphold labour laws, while GRG reassures its commitment to compliance and community development. This scenario offers an opportunity for all parties involved to engage in constructive dialogue and foster an environment of transparency and accountability within the business sector.
