Labasa’s Tourism Dreams Thwarted by Waste Woes

Labasa’s potential as a tourism destination is being compromised by inadequate waste disposal practices, according to Dr. Joeli Veitayaki, a strategic advisor for Blue Prosperity Fiji. He highlighted that significant amounts of waste, especially plastics, are improperly managed, which can take years to decompose. This contributes to unattractive and unhealthy conditions that deter potential visitors.

Speaking at a workshop organized by the Wildlife Conservation Society, Dr. Veitayaki pointed out that the unnecessary burning of forests and sugarcane fields exacerbates the issue. He noted that this not only pollutes the air but also damages natural habitats and diminishes the town’s aesthetic appeal. The frequent practice of burning these areas releases dangerous emissions into the air.

Dr. Veitayaki emphasized the urgent need for improved waste management systems and more stringent land use regulations to tackle these challenges effectively.

In response, Samuela Ligairi, the special administrator of the Labasa Town Council, mentioned that new rubbish bins have been installed throughout the town to encourage proper waste disposal. He expressed hope that this initiative would help mitigate the issue of improper rubbish disposal.
