Labasa staged a comeback to defeat Suva 3-1 in a thrilling opening match of the 2024 FMF Inter District Championship (IDC) held at Churchill Park in Lautoka.
The match showcased the skills of both teams, with several near misses and impressive saves from goalkeepers Simione Tamanisau and Akuila Mateisuva. Suva initially took the lead when defender Joeli Ranitu scored in the 41st minute, heading in a corner from Joe Moses that caught Tamanisau and his defense off guard.
However, Labasa equalized in stoppage time of the first half when Bruce Hughes fouled Lekima Gonerau in the box. Christopher Wasasala calmly converted the penalty, ensuring both teams went into halftime level.
In the second half, Labasa seized control as veteran Taniela Waqa blasted in a second goal in the 51st minute following a well-crafted build-up. Despite Suva coach Babs Khan bringing in Solomon Islanders Gagame Feni and Jaygrey Sipikana to enhance their offense, Labasa’s determination prevailed. Nippy striker Fordney Junior capped off the victory by scoring in the 87th minute with an excellent strike.
