The streets of Labasa Town were vibrant yesterday as the Washington Tin Band put on an energetic performance, highlighting the community spirit after the cancellation of the New Year’s street party in the Northern Division. Coming from Lami Village in Suva, this 13-member band’s lively music, crafted from empty drums, tins, sticks, and containers, delighted onlookers gathered outside Dutt’s Shoe World and Chinatown Shops.

Band leader Mosese Ravadra shared that their entertainment tour had begun earlier in the week in Bua, with plans to spend several days in Labasa visiting villages before heading to Savusavu and Taveuni by week’s end. “The purpose of our tour is to convey New Year wishes through our music,” Mr. Ravadra explained. This marked the band’s second consecutive year traveling from Viti Levu to Vanua Levu to spread New Year cheer.

During the lively performances, spectators were encouraged to contribute by placing a tin among the musicians. The funds collected will support the band members, especially students, with their back-to-school expenses. “There’s no fixed amount; whatever the generous people of the friendly North bless us with will be utilized for our children, who have dedicated their time to perform during this tour,” Mr. Ravadra elaborated.

Moreover, Mr. Ravadra mentioned another group of younger musicians performing on the streets of Suva, ensuring that the New Year’s spirit is felt by all. “Our goal is to include everyone in this celebration and bring joy wherever we go,” he stated. This initiative by the Washington Tin Band not only blends entertainment with community support but also embodies a meaningful way to kick off the year for families across the North and beyond.

By merging festive enjoyment with social responsibility, the Washington Tin Band exemplifies how music can evoke joy and unity while addressing educational needs. Their efforts serve as a reminder that community support and connection are indispensable, especially as the new year unfolds, providing hope and a positive outlook for the future.

In summary, the Washington Tin Band’s performances enrich the cultural landscape and build strong community ties, illustrating the dual role of music in uplifting spirits and fostering educational support for local families.
