The streets of Labasa Town were filled with excitement as the Washington Tin Band showcased their vibrant performance, marking an important festive occasion following the cancellation of the New Year’s street party in the Northern Division. Originating from Lami Village in Suva, this 13-member band entertained audiences outside Dutt’s Shoe World and Chinatown Shops, captivating passersby with their lively tunes created from empty drums, tins, sticks, and containers.

Band leader Mosese Ravadra shared that their entertainment tour started earlier in the week in Bua, with plans to spend several days in Labasa visiting local villages before heading to Savusavu and Taveuni. “The purpose of our tour is to wish everyone a happy New Year through our music,” Mr. Ravadra stated, highlighting that this marks the band’s second consecutive year traveling from Viti Levu to Vanua Levu to spread joy during the New Year festivities.

During their performances, the band encourages contributions from spectators by placing a tin among the musicians. The funds collected are aimed at supporting band members, particularly students, with back-to-school expenses. “There’s no fixed amount; whatever the generous people of the friendly North bless us with will be used for our children, who have dedicated their time to perform during this tour,” explained Mr. Ravadra.

Additionally, another group of younger band members is performing on the streets of Suva, ensuring that the spirit of the New Year reaches everyone. “Our goal is to include everyone in this celebration and bring joy wherever we go,” he remarked.
