The crushing season at the Labasa Suga Mill concluded on Monday, but there was no formal ceremony to commemorate the closure or to report the total amount of cane processed as had been customary in previous years. An official from the Fiji Sugar Corporation stated that a press release detailing the combined tonnage from all three mills will be issued later this week.

Minister for Sugar Charan Jeath Singh noted that the Labasa mill outperformed the two sugar mills located in the Western Division. He shared that the initial projection for cane crushing was 547,000 tonnes, and the mill has exceeded this target, indicating an improvement in productivity compared to last year. The minister committed to providing detailed crushing data later in the week.

This season’s success reflects positively on the sugar industry, as the ability to surpass previous targets may signal a recovery and growth potential within the sector, bringing optimism for future harvests and contributing to the local economy.

Overall, this season’s achievements at the Labasa mill offer a hopeful outlook for the future of the sugar industry in Fiji, suggesting increased efficiency and production capabilities.
