The business sector in Labasa has expressed strong support for the upcoming Battle of the Giants tournament, set to take place next year at Subrail Park. This confirmation comes from Mohammed Yusuf, the chief executive of the Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA), who announced that Labasa will host the event.
Paul Jaduram, the president of the Macuata Tourism Association, welcomed the decision, praising Fiji FA for its confidence in the Labasa Town Council. Jaduram highlighted that the tournament could significantly boost economic activity in the area by attracting visitors and leveraging the sports tourism potential that Labasa possesses. He noted that the town has adequate hotel accommodations to invite guests from Viti Levu.
Ravneel Pratap, the coach of the Labasa football team, sees this as a prime chance for his squad to reclaim the title they lost this year. Labasa previously secured the B.O.G title in 2023, and Pratap emphasized the necessity for the council to enhance the playing surface to ensure high-quality football during the tournament.
Earlier this year, Labasa hosted the Digicel Fiji FACT tournament, which drew a substantial crowd, indicating strong interest in football within the community. Pratap expressed that while there would be pressure to perform well at home, the excitement of competing in front of local fans is unparalleled.
In their efforts to prepare for the Fiji FACT, the Labasa Town Council has made significant investments, including installing new floodlights valued at over $40,000.
This commitment from both the business community and local leaders reflects a united front in promoting sports and tourism, and establishes Labasa as a hub for significant sporting events in Fiji, fostering not just local pride but also economic growth.
This upcoming tournament presents a wonderful opportunity not only for football enthusiasts but also for the local economy, showcasing the positive impact of sports tourism on community development.
