Labasa is currently facing a significant parking challenge, with the rapid growth of vehicles far exceeding the town’s available parking spaces. This has led to increased frustration among residents and business owners, prompting the Labasa Town Council to acknowledge the crisis and take immediate action toward finding solutions for motorists and local businesses.
The situation has escalated with the recent implementation of $100 fines for illegal parking, which many business operators claim is putting extra stress on their customers and impacting trade in the area. In response to these challenges, Labasa Special Administrator Samuela Ligairi stated that the Council is working on various initiatives aimed at alleviating congestion and enhancing parking facilities.
One potential solution involves partnering with the Fiji Roads Authority to introduce a pay-and-use system in certain single-lane areas, similar to one already in place in Nadi. “We are looking at bringing that machine here to Labasa,” Ligairi noted. Additionally, a temporary public parking area has been established at the main entrance of Subrail Park, allowing motorists to park for a fee of $2.
To further address the issue, the Council is developing temporary parking spaces on back streets. Despite these efforts, there remain doubts among residents about the sufficiency and timeliness of the measures being implemented. The police have confirmed that the ongoing enforcement of parking regulations in Labasa is lawful and adheres to traffic laws.
As the Labasa Town Council continues to seek effective solutions, residents are hopeful that these initiatives will lead to improved parking access and a more accommodating environment for both drivers and local businesses.
