Vendors at the Labasa market are urging for increased police presence due to a growing number of drug dealers in the area. Interim president of the Labasa Market Association, Waisea Makulau, reported witnessing as many as 20 young men selling drugs daily at the market.
“Previously, there were only a few dealers, but now the number has significantly risen. I’ve personally observed these young individuals engaged in drug sales right in front of me,” Mr. Makulau stated.
He emphasized their commitment to combating this issue by consistently reporting the activities to the police. He also highlighted the necessity for additional surveillance cameras to enhance security in the market.
In response, Divisional Police Commander Senior Superintendent Kemueli Baledrokadroka clarified that the police’s efforts against drug-related activities extend beyond just the market area. He noted that since August, there have been four arrests made at the market, indicating an increase in police patrols in the region.
SSP Baledrokadroka mentioned that there have been 24 cases of illegal drug possession reported in the greater Labasa area, with arrests occurring in various locations, including the town center, Subrail Park, the bus stand, and near the Labasa tramline, thanks to proactive officers and public cooperation.
He expressed gratitude for the community’s ongoing support and information sharing, which is crucial in the fight against drug trafficking.
