The business sector in Labasa is uniting to support the hosting of the upcoming Rooster Chicken/Scoop Ice Cream Fiji Football Association’s Battle of the Giants tournament at Subrail Park next year. This announcement comes following confirmation from Fiji FA Chief Executive Mohammed Yusuf that Labasa will take on the responsibilities for this well-regarded event.
Paul Jaduram, President of the Macuata Tourism Association, expressed his appreciation for the Fiji FA’s decision, remarking that it reflects confidence in the Labasa Town Council’s ability to manage the tournament effectively. Jaduram emphasized that the event holds significant potential to boost economic activities within the town, highlighting Labasa’s capacity for sports tourism, which necessitates a cohesive effort from the business community.
With ample hotel accommodations available, Labasa is well-prepared to welcome visitors from Viti Levu, adding further optimism for increased tourism. Ravneel Pratap, the coach of the Labasa men’s football team, views this tournament as a prime opportunity for his players to reclaim the B.O.G title, which they lost earlier this year after winning it in 2023.
Pratap pointed out the necessity for the council to enhance the playing grounds to ensure they meet high standards for quality football. Earlier this year, Labasa successfully hosted the Digicel Fiji FACT tournament, drawing a substantial number of spectators. The local football community is eager for the tournament, with Pratap noting the unique pressure and excitement of competing at home.
In preparation for the Fiji FACT tournament, Labasa Town Council recently invested over $40,000 in new floodlights, indicating their commitment to creating an exceptional experience for players and fans alike.
This tournament represents a fantastic opportunity not only for sports enthusiasts but also for the local economy, fostering a sense of community pride and excitement as both players and fans gear up for an unforgettable event.
