The Labasa Football Academy is poised to receive a significant upgrade, with a $2 million development set to commence in March. This initiative was announced by the chief executive of the Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA), Mohammed Yusuf, in a recent interview. The upgrade will feature a high-performance training pitch, with the official inauguration scheduled to coincide with the Battle of the Giants tournament in August.
In addition to this major project, the Fiji FA has made considerable advancements in enhancing football facilities nationwide. Recent developments include the establishment of beach soccer and futsal courts at the Labasa and Ba academies, with a total investment of $500,000. Furthermore, three futsal courts have been revitalized, demonstrating Fiji FA’s dedication to promoting the sport across the country.
Yusuf conveyed his pride in the progress made this year, noting that the new facilities and successful tournaments are likely to motivate future generations of players. He highlighted the impressive achievements of the year and expressed hope for continued growth, with aspirations set for 2025 and beyond.
Furthermore, plans for the Lomolomo Land Project are underway, pending government approval for land rezoning to facilitate the construction of a $1.5 million high-performance center, which will encompass two grounds, a stadium, and facilities for beach soccer and futsal.
Apart from infrastructure improvements, the Fiji FA has celebrated notable success in local tournaments throughout 2024. The Digicel Pacific Fiji FACT, held in June at Subrail Park in Labasa, saw Lautoka successfully defend their title. Two months later, Lautoka also claimed the Rooster Chicken/Scoops Ice Cream Battle of the Giants title at the HFC Bank Stadium. Additionally, the FMF Inter-District Championship, hosted at Lautoka’s Churchill Park, concluded with Labasa taking the championship, further showcasing their strength in the sport.
In summary, this extensive development initiative reflects Fiji FA’s commitment to enhancing football facilities and promoting the sport, paving the way for future talent and inspiring young athletes across the nation. With the investments being made and the successes of local teams, the future of football in Fiji looks promising.
