The Labasa Town Council is considering the opportunity to host the Fiji Football Association’s FMF Inter District Championship (IDC) tournament. This discussion was sparked by the achievement of the Extra Supermarket Labasa football team, which recently secured victory in this year’s IDC tournament in Lautoka.

Paul Jaduram, the chairperson of the council’s special administrator, stated that if the Fiji FA were to accept their proposal, it would be a significant occasion, marking 50 years since Labasa last hosted the IDC in 1975. The town also held the tournament back in 1969.

Jaduram noted that the Fiji FA has specific requirements that need to be fulfilled for the tournament to take place in Labasa. One key requirement is the availability of two and a half playing pitches at Subrail Park to accommodate the nearly 20 district teams competing in three divisions.

According to him, the main field would serve the Super Premier competition, while the Premier and Senior division matches could occur on the second field. The additional half-pitch would be reserved for training and warm-up activities.

Moreover, he pointed out that the newly constructed Fiji FA Labasa Academy features two standard pitches, which could also serve as alternative venues for the Premier and Senior matches.

Jaduram expressed a commitment to his goal of bringing the IDC back to Labasa by 2026 and emphasized the financial benefits that hosting the tournament could bring. The influx of football fans from Viti Levu and beyond would contribute to the local economy during the week-long event.
