Labasa Eyes 50-Year IDC Comeback: Will They Host?

Labasa Town Council is considering the possibility of hosting the Fiji Football Association’s FMF Inter District Championship (IDC) tournament. This initiative follows the victory of the Extra Supermarket Labasa football team at this year’s IDC tournament held in Lautoka.

Paul Jaduram, the chairperson of the council’s special administration, remarked that if Fiji FA agrees to their proposal, it would be an ideal time, as Labasa last hosted the IDC in 1975. “That’ll be 50 years,” he noted. Labasa also previously hosted the tournament in 1969.

Jaduram explained that the Fiji FA has specific requirements that need to be fulfilled for the tournament to be held in Labasa. One of the main conditions is the availability of two and a half playing pitches at Subrail Park, as nearly 20 district teams are expected to compete in three divisions.

He indicated that the main ground would accommodate the Super Premier competition, while the Premier and Senior division matches could take place on the second ground. The half pitch would be designated for training and warm-up activities.

Additionally, Jaduram mentioned that the newly constructed Fiji FA Labasa Academy features two standard pitches, which could serve as alternate venues for the Premier and Senior games. He expressed commitment to bringing the IDC back to Labasa, noting that the council is also targeting 2026 for this goal.

Aside from the sports aspect, Jaduram highlighted the economic benefits of hosting the IDC, as it would attract football fans from Viti Levu and beyond, ultimately boosting the town’s economy during the week-long event.
