Labasa Eyes 50-Year IDC Comeback: Will Football Return to the Town?

The Labasa Town Council is considering the opportunity to host the Fiji Football Association’s FMF Inter District Championship (IDC) tournament. Council special administrator Paul Jaduram made this announcement following the Extra Supermarket Labasa football team’s triumph in this year’s IDC tournament held in Lautoka.

Jaduram expressed to SUNsports that if Fiji FA approves their request, it would be an ideal time since Labasa last hosted the IDC tournament 50 years ago, in 1975. The only other instance of Labasa hosting the IDC occurred in 1969.

However, Jaduram noted that the Fiji FA has specific requirements to meet before the tournament can be brought to Labasa. One of these requirements is the availability of two and a half playing pitches at Subrail Park, as nearly 20 district teams are expected to compete in three divisions.

He explained that the primary pitch would accommodate the Super Premier competition, while the second ground would host the Premier and Senior division matches. The additional half-pitch would serve for training and warm-up activities. Jaduram mentioned that the recently constructed Fiji FA Labasa Academy features two standard pitches, which could serve as alternative venues for the premier and senior matches.

Despite this hosting request, the council is also looking ahead to 2026 as another opportunity to potentially bring the IDC tournament back to Labasa. Jaduram, who previously served as the president of Labasa FA, expressed his commitment to making this happen.

In addition to the excitement surrounding the tournament, he emphasized the financial benefits of hosting the IDC. The event would attract football fans from Viti Levu and beyond, contributing to the local economy during the week-long tournament.
