Labasa Clings to Top of Fiji’s Extra Premier League as Ba Eyes Top Spot With Game in Hand After 0-0 Draw

Scenic Fiji soccer field with lush mountains and cloudy sky in the background.

Labasa clung to the top of the Extra Premier League table despite being held to a goalless draw by Tailevu Naitasiri yesterday, leaving the northern side on 18 points from nine matches and the title race tighter than ever. The single point was enough to keep Labasa one clear of second-placed Ba, but the margin is fragile: Ba sit on 17 points and hold a game in hand that could see them leapfrog the leaders.

Labasa had the chance to stretch their advantage at the summit but were unable to break down a stubborn Tailevu Naitasiri defence, forcing a scoreless stalemate that nevertheless maintained their slender lead. Ba’s potent form was underlined last weekend when they routed Tailevu Naitasiri 9-0, a result that has kept them in close contention and left their goal difference likely superior — a potentially decisive factor if points are level at the end of the campaign.

Suva occupy third spot with 14 points, while defending champions Rewa and Lautoka sit alongside Nasinu on 13 points apiece in the congested midtable fight. That cluster of clubs will be watching Labasa and Ba closely as the campaign enters a phase where every fixture carries title implications and a slip-up could swing momentum sharply.

At the other end of the table, Tailevu Naitasiri remain rooted to the bottom in 10th place with just three points after nine matches. Yesterday’s resilient display to deny the league leaders a win will offer some encouragement, but the side face a steep climb to climb out of the relegation zone with limited opportunities left to accumulate points.

The Extra Premier League resumes today, giving several clubs the immediate chance to alter the standings. Of particular interest will be when and how Ba use their game in hand: a victory would not only move them to the top but place pressure squarely on Labasa to respond in subsequent fixtures. Conversely, dropped points for Ba would hand Labasa breathing room and strengthen their bid for the title.

With the leaderboard tightly packed and multiple teams within striking distance, the coming rounds are shaping up to be pivotal. Labasa may lead for now, but Ba’s extra match and recent scoring outburst mean the championship picture remains very much open as the season progresses.
