The Labasa bypass road project has become an essential focus for the government, as Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka emphasizes the urgency to initiate work on the road. During recent discussions with the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), Mr. Rabuka pointed out the crucial need for dual road access to and from Labasa Town to accommodate the growing traffic flow, noting that the current one-way system is inadequate. He recalled a specific instance when fire crews were delayed due to restricted road access during a fire incident in Labasa Town.
Additionally, the Prime Minister proposed transforming the old rail bridge next to the main bridge into a two-way road to enhance traffic management.
However, the project has faced criticism from various stakeholders, particularly public transport providers who have expressed dissatisfaction over traffic congestion and delays in service. Sujit Sharma, the general secretary of the Labasa Town Taxi Association, emphasized the dire need for the bypass, explaining how the excessive number of vehicles during peak hours exacerbates the congestion and negatively impacts local businesses.
During a public consultation last October, FRA assets manager Amit Deo stated that the project is still under discussion management phase. The bypass is a complex endeavor with an estimated cost of $30 million, a sum revealed following the Coalition Government’s assumption of office. Mr. Deo acknowledged the challenges involved in bringing the project to fruition, noting that it would take time to develop.
Looking ahead, stakeholders remain hopeful as talks continue between the town council and the Government. With the population of vehicles increasing alongside further developments in Labasa, the bypass is viewed as crucial for reducing congestion and fostering growth in the area.
In summary, while the Labasa bypass road project faces challenges, the ongoing discussions and recognition of its importance signal a commitment to addressing the transportation needs in the region. This project could greatly improve accessibility and support economic expansion, showcasing positive steps towards enhancing infrastructure in Labasa.
