Former trade unionist and aviation industry expert, Ben Kush, has announced his candidacy for the 2026 general elections representing The People’s Alliance (PA). Kush believes his extensive background in the aviation sector positions him uniquely to contribute to Fiji’s future.
Kush expressed his strong faith in the PA, stating that he voted for the party in the 2022 elections due to its principles, ideals, and manifesto, which he believes are key to challenging the current ruling FijiFirst government. He is fully committed to the PA and hopes to secure the opportunity to represent the party over the next 15 months.
With over three decades of operational experience in aviation, Kush highlights the capabilities of local experts. He argues against the need for foreign expatriates, asserting that Fijians can provide the same, if not better, contributions than expatriates who often command high salary packages.
Acknowledging the significant challenges faced by the current administration, including issues inherited from the previous government, Kush noted the importance of patience in rebuilding trust and stability within the community. He commended the PA’s ministers for their hard work under difficult circumstances and expressed gratitude to his supporters, emphasizing the encouragement he draws from growing support across various communities, especially from his familial ties in Lau and Sabeto.
This announcement by Kush comes amidst calls from PA leader and Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka for young leaders to step up in preparation for the general elections. Rabuka stressed the significance of unity within the party and affirmed the need for a tangible agenda to regain voter trust.
The evolving political landscape in Fiji, characterized by emerging new leadership and grassroots initiatives, presents a hopeful outlook for the 2026 elections. With candidates like Kush ready to take on leadership roles, Fiji appears poised for a renewed democratic engagement, encouraging participation and representation for all citizens in shaping the country’s future.
