Amit Kumar, competing from Taveuni, weighed in at 76.3 kg yesterday in Nair Dias ahead of the South Pacific Boxing Promotion (SPBP) event taking place today. He expressed his determination to perform well during the match.
His opponent, Mikaele Marisi from the Lautoka Happy Gloves boxing club, weighed in at 75.2 kg. Kumar, who last participated in a fight in 2004, is making a comeback after a 20-year hiatus and feels prepared for the 4×3 format of the event.
“I’ve been training for a month now, and I feel great. I will give it my all,” Kumar stated.
Mohammed Shameem, director of South Pacific Boxing Promotion, highlighted the event as an excellent platform for local boxers to showcase their skills. “We have arranged three IBO sanctioned fights, something unprecedented in Fiji, and we are committed to supporting local talent,” he said.
Shameem also mentioned plans for a larger event if everything goes smoothly, aiming for May of next year.
In addition to Kumar’s fight, other matches scheduled for the evening include Jnr Abhay Chand versus Vitori Cabalevu in a 6×3 contest, Apisai Naciqa against Marika Kavika, Manoa Tuiyaro facing Ezra Volavola, and Amo Wati competing in the only 4×2 female bout against Maureen Neumia.
