Kumar's Call for Change: Is Rabuka Losing His Grip?

Kumar’s Call for Accountability: Is Fiji’s Government Listening?

Opposition MP Premila Kumar has voiced strong criticisms against Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, claiming he has lost control over his ministers and has failed to effectively govern the nation. During a recent parliamentary session, Kumar highlighted the government’s tendency to shift blame onto the previous FijiFirst administration for various issues, including hospital equipment failures and shortages in medical supplies.

In her response to the President’s address, Kumar pressed the government to stop the blame game and address critical challenges facing the nation. She pointed out that instead of enacting necessary reforms, the Coalition Government focuses on hosting expensive events and unproductive meetings while discussing future plans that remain unfulfilled.

Addressing concerns regarding the judiciary’s management, Kumar raised serious questions about the government’s dedication to justice, urging the Coalition to go beyond merely inaugurating projects initiated by the previous regime and instead generate real outcomes for citizens.

Kumar’s criticisms resonate with discussions previously held in Parliament, where the government’s performance has come under scrutiny, and claims of suppressing dissent through limited parliamentary engagement have surfaced. She also criticized Rabuka’s recent cabinet expansion, which brought the total number of ministers to an unprecedented 34, igniting concerns regarding accountability and operational efficiency.

This ongoing political dialogue underscores a growing demand for better governance and accountability from the current administration. As Parliament reconvenes, there is cautious optimism that the advocacy for transparency and more active governance may pave the way for significant reforms that meet the needs of the Fijian populace. Sustained dialogue in this vein may encourage a government that is more attuned to community requirements, ultimately fostering renewed trust in leadership.
