A clean-up campaign along Koronivia Rd in Nausori resulted in the collection of 596 kilograms of waste and recyclable materials last Friday. The event was organized by the Pacific Recycling Foundation (PRF) in collaboration with Waste Recyclers Fiji Ltd, Malhana Cloud Kitchen, Koronivia Business Council, and local residents. The clean-up stretched from the Koronivia roundabout to the Shiv Krish Temple on Kabutri Drive.
Amitesh Deo, founder of PRF, underscored the necessity of shared responsibility in waste management. He noted that the volume of waste gathered in just two hours underscores the urgent need for a shift away from a throwaway culture. “We must all commit to keeping Koronivia clean and green for future generations,” he stated.
The clean-up revealed a considerable amount of household waste and recyclables including baby diapers, PET bottles, construction debris, beer bottles and cans, takeaway food containers, clothing, razors, and cartons filled with unused items. Many of these items were discovered obstructing drains following recent grass-cutting by the Fiji Roads Authority along the roadside.
Deo expressed regret that some waste had to be left behind as their teams could not access the muddy drains due to the risk of hazardous objects that could injure volunteers during the clean-up. “This is not just about cleaning up waste; it’s about changing mindsets. We call on every individual to reflect on their habits and make conscious choices that support our environment,” he added.
PRF also thanked the Fiji Police Force for their support in ensuring safety and maintaining smooth traffic flow during the campaign.
