Koro Island’s Call to Safeguard Students: A New Educational Horizon

The Minister for Justice, Siromi Turaga, is urging parents on Koro Island to enroll their children in Koro High School rather than sending them to schools in urban areas due to the social challenges facing Viti Levu.

Mr. Turaga made his remarks during a community discussion in Nasau Village, Mudu, Koro. He emphasized the importance of safeguarding children on the island and encouraged parents to consider Koro High School for their children, especially as Year 13 becomes available.

“The urban areas have changed significantly. There are numerous risks, and we must reflect on whether we want our children to be influenced by these issues or if we should safeguard them by choosing Koro High School as a stepping stone before they move on to higher education,” Mr. Turaga stated.

He also announced that new programs would be implemented at Koro High School, including Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs. Additionally, he mentioned that the government recently approved funding for a school chaplain’s salary.

“Education in Fiji started with missionaries, and it will continue. The absence of chaplains in schools has led to noticeable changes in the younger generation, and we have much work ahead of us. Today marks progress as we engage in constructive dialogue,” he added.

Furthermore, the Tui Nasau of Nasau Village, Vonevate Vetaukula, revealed that the village plans to purchase internet data from Starlink Services to better support the educational needs of its students. Currently, Koro High School has approximately 300 students enrolled.
