The Minister for Justice, Siromi Turaga, is urging parents on Koro Island to enroll their children in Koro High School instead of urban schools due to rising social issues on Viti Levu.
Mr. Turaga shared his advice during a talanoa session at Nasau Village in Mudu, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the youth on the island. He stated, “When we have Year 13 at Koro High School, I encourage you to send your children here. The urban areas are different now, with many dangerous situations emerging. We must decide whether we want our children to face these problems or protect them by sending them to Koro High School before they move on to tertiary education.”
He also announced the introduction of new programs at the school, including TVET programs, following the government’s recent decision to fund a salary for the school chaplain. “Education in Fiji began with missionaries, and it will continue. The absence of chaplains in schools contributes to a shift in generational values, and we have much to accomplish. This is a significant day for us to share our views,” Mr. Turaga added.
Additionally, Vonevate Vetaukula, the Tui Nasau of Nasau Village, mentioned plans for the village to purchase internet data from Starlink Services to enhance the educational resources for students. Currently, Koro High School hosts approximately 300 students.
