Kikau Prepares for Epic Clash Against PNG: Will the Bati Rise to the Challenge?

Viliame Kikau, a standout forward for the Vodafone Fiji Bati, is eager for their upcoming match on Saturday night. The 29-year-old player has emphasized the physical toughness of the Papua New Guinea Kumuls, comparing their intensity to a “ton of bricks.”

Kikau acknowledged the Kumuls as always being a formidable opponent, making it clear that the match will be challenging. However, he is hopeful that with the support of their home crowd, the Bati will deliver a spectacular performance.

“It’s a significant game against our PNG brothers; they play hard from the start to the finish,” Kikau remarked. “It feels like facing a ton of bricks for the whole 80 minutes.”

Last year, the Bau, Tailevu native opted out of the Pacific Bowl Championship in Papua New Guinea to prepare for the 2024 NRL season with the Bulldogs. During training sessions at Albert Park, he has taken on a leadership role, guiding younger players.

Reflecting on his beginnings with the Bati, Kikau recalled being a shy newcomer, relying heavily on senior teammates for communication. “A lot of the younger players haven’t had much NRL experience, so I try to give them confidence by encouraging open communication,” he explained.

The Bati squad features promising young talents like Jordan Miller, who is expected to make his debut, and Jethro Rinakama. Kikau noted that while these players show potential, they tend to be reserved.

“Fijian kids can be shy, and it takes time for them to open up,” he said. “I’m here to support them and help them navigate this experience, ensuring they leave the camp having learned something valuable.”

As the team prepares for the match, Kikau is focused on ensuring they are ready for the challenge ahead.
