Kickstart Your Journey: FNU Launches New Martial Arts Programme!

The Fiji National University (FNU) has launched an Introduction (Multi) Martial Arts Programme at its Nasinu Campus, led by Captain Tevita Korovou, a former bodyguard of the late President Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara and head of martial arts for the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF).

This new Certificate Programme aims to provide participants with a deep understanding and practical skills across various martial arts disciplines, including Hapkido, Hosinsul, Haidong Gumdo, Tae Kwon Do, Wuzhu Sanda Boxing, and Judo. The initiative seeks to promote a holistic approach to martial arts training that enhances physical fitness, mental fortitude, spiritual well-being, and self-defence skills.

Professor Govinda Lingam, Chief Guest and Professor in Teacher Education at the College of Humanities and Education, emphasized that martial arts extends beyond physical exercise; it is a pathway to personal development. He stated that the programme is not just an opportunity for skill acquisition but also encourages self-discipline, overall fitness, and personal growth.

Lingam noted that martial arts is inclusive and accessible to everyone, regardless of age or physical ability. He expressed confidence in Captain Korovou’s ability to create a supportive environment that empowers students to learn at their own pace within a culture of mutual respect.

Dr. Victor Alasa, Associate Dean of Learning and Teaching at FNU, highlighted that this initiative represents a major advancement in the university’s goal to offer diverse educational opportunities. The six-week short course will allow students to master various martial arts techniques under the guidance of experienced instructors, aimed at building their confidence and technical abilities.

Suraj Singh, Head of the Department of Secondary and Sports Education, added that in today’s complex society, the values and skills taught in martial arts are increasingly significant. He reiterated that the programme promotes a comprehensive understanding of martial arts, not just in terms of physical abilities, but also in cultivating mental resilience and humility.
