Captain Tevita Korovou, the former bodyguard of the late President Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, has taken on the role of programme instructor for the newly launched Introduction (Multi) Martial Arts Programme at the Fiji National University’s College of Humanities, located at the Nasinu Campus. Korovou, who previously served as the head of martial arts for the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), leads this initiative aimed at providing participants with a comprehensive understanding and practical skills in various martial arts disciplines.
The Certificate Programme includes training in several martial arts forms, such as Hapkido, Hosinsul, Haidong Gumdo, Tae Kwon Do, Wuzhu Sanda Boxing, and Judo. Its objective is to promote a holistic approach to martial arts, enhancing participants’ physical fitness, mental strength, self-defense skills, and overall well-being.
Professor Govinda Lingam, the Chief Guest and a professor in Teacher Education at the College of Humanities and Education, emphasized that martial arts transcends mere physical activity. He views this programme as a gateway to self-discipline, physical fitness, mental resilience, and personal growth, affirming that it is inclusive for individuals of all ages, backgrounds, and physical capabilities.
Professor Lingam expressed confidence in Captain Korovou’s ability to create a safe and supportive learning environment, enabling students to learn at their own pace while fostering a culture of mutual respect and growth. He highlighted that the programme imparts not only technical skills but also valuable life lessons, promoting calmness in adversity, focus in overcoming challenges, and a commitment to continuous self-improvement.
Dr. Victor Alasa, Associate Dean of Learning and Teaching, noted that this initiative represents a significant step in the university’s dedication to offering diverse educational opportunities to meet student interests. The short course is set to span six weeks and aims to provide a thorough understanding of various martial arts techniques, with experienced instructors guiding students to develop essential skills and confidence.
Suraj Singh, Head of Department for Secondary and Sports Education, pointed out that the principles and skills fostered through martial arts are increasingly relevant in today’s complex society. He reiterated the programme’s holistic approach to martial arts training, which not only focuses on physical techniques but also encourages participants to handle adversity with composure and humility.
