Kickstart Your Journey: Fiji National University Launches Unique Martial Arts Program

Captain Tevita Korovou, the former bodyguard of the late President Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, has become the program instructor for the Introduction (Multi) Martial Arts Program at Fiji National University’s College of Humanities, located at the Nasinu Campus. Korovou previously served as the head of martial arts for the Republic of Fiji Military Forces.

The newly launched Certificate Program aims to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding and practical skills in various martial arts disciplines. The curriculum includes training in Hapkido, Hosinsul, Haidong Gumdo, Tae Kwon Do, Wuzhu Sanda Boxing, and Judo. The program seeks to promote a holistic approach to martial arts, enhancing participants’ physical fitness, mental fortitude, spiritual growth, and self-defence abilities.

Professor Govinda Lingam, the Chief Guest and a Professor in Teacher Education at the College of Humanities and Education, highlighted that martial arts transcend mere physical activity, serving as a path of personal transformation. He emphasized that the program opens avenues for self-discipline, physical well-being, mental resilience, and overall personal development.

Lingam also affirmed that martial arts is accessible to everyone, irrespective of age, background, or physical abilities. He expressed confidence that Captain Korovou would provide a safe and nurturing environment where all students can learn and feel empowered while fostering mutual respect and growth.

Dr. Victor Alasa, the Associate Dean of Learning and Teacher at the College, noted the program’s importance in enhancing the university’s commitment to diverse educational offerings that align with student interests and aspirations. He encouraged students to enroll, promising a rigorous training experience led by experienced instructors that will build necessary skills and confidence.

Suraj Singh, Head of the Department for Secondary and Sports Education, discussed the relevance of martial arts in today’s complex society. He outlined the program’s structure as a six-week course designed to foster a holistic approach, focusing on physical fitness, self-defence, and overall wellness. Singh added that martial arts cultivates composure and humility, equipping individuals to navigate challenging situations effectively.
