Kemu Valetini, the player who clinched victory for Drua with a game-winning penalty in his debut match against the Crusaders in Round 3 of the 2023 Super Rugby Pacific season, has quickly become a beloved figure among Fijian rugby fans.

Described as “a solid No.10” and “a rising star” by fans on social media, Valetini’s journey in rugby began in Melbourne where he was born and raised. He started his career with the Melbourne Rising in 2018 and later played for Valladolid Rugby Asociación in Spain during the 2019-2020 season.

His talent was recognized while training with the full Rebels side in Australia, leading to a short-term contract with Drua after impressing coaches in Manly.

Now 29 years old and originally from Galoa, Kadavu, Valetini is focused on enhancing both his professional skills and personal growth. However, he admits to struggling with the Fijian language, acknowledging that he grew up speaking primarily English, despite his father’s efforts to teach him Fijian.

He mentioned his plans to visit Kadavu, which he has yet to see during his year and a half stay in Fiji. As the new season approaches, Valetini is enthusiastic about the preparations and what lies ahead.

When discussing his personal interests, Valetini humorously noted his love for chicken curry and preference for comfortable clothing. He described himself as an adventurous and somewhat extroverted child who enjoyed spending time with friends.

Valetini highlighted that alongside scoring tries, kicking plays a crucial role in games. He understands the importance of this skill and approaches it with dedication, focusing on staying fit and healthy throughout the competition.

He expressed gratitude for his current position and shared advice for young athletes, reminding them of the importance of listening to their parents, who know them best and offer unwavering support throughout their journeys.
