Kemu Valetini: Fiji’s New Rugby Sensation on the Rise

Kemu Valetini, the player who kicked the decisive penalty in his debut match for Drua against the Crusaders during Round 3 of the 2023 Super Rugby Pacific season, has quickly become a beloved figure among Fijian rugby fans.

Fans have showered him with praise on social media, calling him “a solid No.10,” “a natural first five eight,” and “a rising star,” reflecting on his journey from semi-professional play to representing the Drua.

Valetini, who hails from Galoa, Kadavu, was born and raised in Melbourne, Australia. He began his rugby career with the Melbourne Rising in 2018 and later played for Valladoid Rugby Asociación in Spain during the 2019-2020 season. His talent was recognized while training in Manly, leading to a short-term contract with the Drua.

Having trained with the Rebels in Australia, Valetini has gained invaluable knowledge and experience, and he aims to improve both professionally and personally. However, he humorously admits to struggling with the Fijian language, stating, “I grew up in Australia, so obviously English is the spoken language.” He plans to visit Kadavu soon, despite living in Fiji for over a year and a half.

As preparations for the season begin, Valetini expresses excitement about the upcoming matches. He describes himself as someone who enjoys a good chicken curry, prefers loose clothing, and was adventurous and sociable as a child.

When asked who the cheeky member of the team is, he readily names Peni Matawalu, showcasing a light-hearted camaraderie within the squad.

For Valetini, kicking is more than just a skill; it is crucial for the team’s success. He emphasizes the importance of taking the season one week at a time, while also focusing on maintaining his fitness and health.

Valetini reflects on his growth, sharing wisdom for young athletes: “Listen to your parents. They know you best and have always supported you, just as my parents have supported me.”
