Keeping the People First: A Call for Responsible Governance

The Coalition Government is urged to govern with responsibility and prioritize the interests of the people on a daily basis. This sentiment was expressed by Laisenia Qarase Jr., the son of former prime minister Laisenia Qarase, during an interview.

“They have to be willing to serve sacrificially every day,” stated Qarase Jr., criticizing the government’s plan to increase their pay as irresponsible.

Qarase Jr. emphasized that parliamentarians should prioritize the welfare of the people above their own interests. “That was what I saw with my dad during his term as prime minister; he had the heart and the interest of the people first before he thought of himself,” he noted.

He pointed out that his father had left a better-paying position in the private sector, receiving $106,000 as the country’s prime minister as a form of sacrifice. “But what I’m seeing now is just parliamentarians wanting to increase their pay. It’s not justified and very irresponsible,” he concluded.
