A group of young entrepreneurs in Fiji, known as the Veitamani Kava Dealers, has recently launched a new business to support local farmers by providing a marketplace for selling kava. Selemo Banicau, a 29-year-old from Vusasivo, Natewa, represents this initiative, which has been operational for only a few months but is already showing promising development.
The primary aim of their business is to assist local farmers who face challenges in selling their kava directly to the market. The Veitamani Kava Dealers have established connections in several villages, including Dawa, Vusasivo, Nadavaci, and Naqaravatu, to ensure a steady supply of quality kava. They sell kava at prices ranging from $10 to $11 per kilogram, depending on the quality.
The dealers have noted that on some occasions, they generate revenues between $5,000 and $6,000 from kava sales in the Savusavu market. They are using their profits to develop their homes and invest in the Fiji Holding Unit Trust, underscoring the positive impact of their business on the local economy.
However, the venture is not without its challenges. The unpredictable weather conditions have made it difficult for farmers to cultivate kava consistently. Despite these hurdles, Selemo encourages other young people to pursue similar entrepreneurial paths and not to hesitate in creating beneficial initiatives for their communities.
In summary, the Veitamani Kava Dealers exemplify the spirit of entrepreneurship and community support in Fiji. Their efforts not only provide a sustainable source of income for local farmers but also demonstrate how innovative solutions can foster growth and resilience in agriculture-based economies. There is great potential for success as they continue to adapt and overcome the obstacles they face.
