A group of young entrepreneurs, known as Veitamani Kava Dealers, is making strides in their newly established business aimed at supporting local communities through the sale of kava. Selemo Banicau, a 29-year-old resident of Vusasivo, Natewa in Cakaudrove, shared that their venture has been operational for only seven months, yet they are witnessing promising growth.
The primary purpose of the business is to strengthen community ties and address various challenges faced by households that require instant cash. Veitamani Kava Dealers, a brand dedicated to selling traditional Fijian kava, sources its products from several villages around Natewa, including Dawa, Vusasivo, Nadavaci, and Naqaravatu, enhancing local economies.
Currently, kava prices range from $10 to $11 per kilogram, depending on quality and market demands. Despite facing tough competition in Savusavu’s marketplace, Banicau emphasizes that their kava continues to attract buyers. This enterprise is not only about profit; it also aims to uplift families, allowing them to improve their living conditions, including constructing houses and investing in savings through local financial trusts.
However, the business does encounter challenges, particularly with erratic weather conditions affecting kava supply. The team is focused on evolving their business strategies, potentially transitioning into a cooperative model to ensure sustainability. Banicau encourages his peers not to shy away from entrepreneurship, highlighting the importance of their contributions towards community welfare and personal success.
In summary, this innovative approach to supporting local communities through kava sales represents a positive trend in fostering economic well-being in Fiji, reflecting both resilience and determination among young entrepreneurs. Their story serves as an inspiring example for others looking to make an impact in their communities.
