A group of kava dealers known as Veitamani Kava Dealers, led by 29-year-old Selemo Banicau from Vusasivo, Natewa, have recently embarked on an initiative to support kava farmers through their business. This initiative aims to provide farmers with timely financial support and improve the availability of sustainable kava products in the market.
After just seven months into their venture, the dealers are already seeing positive growth and are able to address local challenges faced by kava farmers, such as the rapid demand for kava in households and communities. The dealers, who operate primarily in several villages within the Natewa region, including Dawa, Vusasivo, Nadavaci, and Naqaravatu, highlight their commitment to assist farmers in overcoming issues related to the quick turnover needed for kava sales.
Currently, they are selling fresh kava at prices ranging from $10 to $11 per kilo, and this is dependent on the quality and demand of the product. They also have plans to expand their sales into markets such as Savusavu, where they anticipate earning between $5,000 and $6,000 through their kava sales in a given week.
Although there are ongoing challenges, particularly related to weather conditions affecting kava crops, Selemo encourages his fellow farmers not to shy away from exploring beneficial business strategies that can enhance their livelihoods. He emphasizes the importance of strong community ties and reliance on divine guidance for success in their endeavors.
This initiative not only fosters economic growth for the farmers involved but also strengthens community bonds and cultivates a sustainable agricultural practice centered around a vital cultural crop. The positive outlook of Veitamani Kava Dealers shows the potential for local businesses to thrive and adapt in the face of challenges, ultimately benefiting the wider community.
