A new initiative by the Veitamani Kava Dealers is gaining attention for its efforts to support local farmers through the sale of kava, a traditional drink in Fiji. Selemo Banicau, a 29-year-old from Vusasivo, Natewa, has recently shared insights into this emerging business that has been operational for just over a month.
The primary goal of this business is to assist local farmers facing economic challenges in their households, often needing quick cash solutions. Identified as a potential means to this end, the Veitamani Kava Dealers are actively involved in purchasing kava from several villages surrounding Natewa, including Dawa, Vusasivo, Nadavaci, and Naqaravatu.
Currently, kava prices range from $10 to $11 per kilogram, depending on quality and demand. Interestingly, the team at Veitamani has observed a steady demand for kava in the market, particularly in Savusavu, which they plan to capitalize on. According to Banicau, they aim to generate between $5,000 and $6,000 in revenue through their sales.
Through this business model, Banicau and his team aim to reinvest their earnings into building homes and strengthening their financial standing within the Fiji Holding Unit Trust. While they are optimistic about their growth, they have also encountered challenges, particularly with unpredictable weather affecting kava production.
Banicau encourages potential entrepreneurs not to be discouraged by difficulties but to seek beneficial opportunities that can enhance their livelihoods, demonstrating faith in God during times of uncertainty.
This initiative not only creates economic opportunities for local farmers but also fosters community resilience in the face of challenges, portraying a hopeful outlook for the future of traditional Fijian businesses.
Overall, the Veitamani Kava Dealers’ endeavor to empower local farmers may serve as a catalyst for further business development in the region, benefiting both the community and the local economy.
