Kava Crisis: Prime Minister Calls for Urgent Action

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka addressed the importance of reducing kava abuse during the Tailevu Provincial Council meeting held in Vuci Village on Wednesday. He urged the community to avoid excessive kava consumption, linking it to the increasing rates of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the nation.

The council serves as a crucial platform to address social challenges faced by local communities. Mr. Rabuka called on village leaders to take action in managing kava intake and emphasized the need to empower individuals, helping them to handle the difficulties of today’s unique circumstances.

He noted that various issues have emerged among the Fijian population, underscoring the necessity for a collective effort to enhance living conditions and build resilience. Mr. Rabuka also recognized the province’s Strategic Development Plan, which aligns with government objectives.

He remarked, “The Tailevu Provincial Council will focus on development this year. This is a pivotal issue as we strive to meet our development targets. Strong leadership is essential for achieving our aspirations.”
