Kava Crisis: Fiji Sugar Locomotive Drivers Under Fire

The Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) locomotive drivers are under scrutiny following allegations of misconduct. Reports suggest that some drivers have been consuming kava during work hours, a concern raised by farmers from the Wainikoro Sector in Labasa.

Minister for Sugar and Multi-Ethnic Affairs, Charan Jeath Singh, expressed his disapproval of such behavior, stating that his ministry and the FSC would not condone the misuse of office by employees. Farmers have voiced their concerns about potential delays in train trips for transporting sugarcane to Wainikoro, which they believe may be linked to kava consumption.

Additionally, the ministry is conducting an investigation into a recent fatal accident in Lausa, Tavua, with Mr. Singh awaiting feedback from the FSC regarding the incident. To enhance oversight of locomotive drivers, Mr. Singh has requested the installation of Global Positioning System (GPS) devices in locomotives. This technology aims to track the locations of the drivers and their vehicles at all times, ensuring that locomotives arrive at rural farms punctually to maximize sugarcane transportation for milling.
