Kava Controversy: Fiji Sugar Workers Under Scrutiny

The Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) locomotive drivers are currently under scrutiny due to allegations of office abuse. Reports suggest that some drivers have been consuming kava during their work hours. This issue was raised by farmers from the Wainikoro Sector in Labasa to Minister for Sugar and Multi-Ethnic Affairs, Charan Jeath Singh.

Mr. Singh expressed his disapproval, stating that he would not tolerate the consumption of kava by FSC employees during working hours. He emphasized that both his ministry and the FSC are committed to addressing such inappropriate conduct.

Farmers have voiced concerns that kava consumption may have resulted in delays for train trips to Wainikoro, impacting the carting of sugarcane. In light of a recent fatal accident that occurred in Lausa, Tavua, Mr. Singh is awaiting a detailed response from the FSC regarding the incident.

To enhance oversight of locomotive drivers, Mr. Singh has requested the installation of Global Positioning System (GPS) devices in locomotives. He noted that this would allow for real-time monitoring of both the drivers and the locomotives, ensuring timely access to interior farms for maximum sugarcane transport to the mill.
