Kava Consumption Abuse Strains Families in Kadavu: Urgent Call for Regulation and Communal Effort

The misuse of kava in Kadavu is causing significant distress. Bulou Luisa Duikete, the leader of the Kadavu Women’s Association, has expressed concern over its extensive consumption leading to family issues.

Duikete emphasized that many men from local villages tend to prioritize kava consumption over their families. She underlined the strain this habit is putting on their families, particularly when household funds are diverted away from essential costs of living.

This situation has compelled many women on the island to shoulder dual responsibilities of caring for their families and providing food.

In light of this problem, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has called on village headmen to be more proactive in their duties. He stressed that it’s not solely the government’s task to assist every villager, but they require the support of local leaders as well.

Rabuka highlighted the need for a communal effort to preserve their future and cultural identity. He further reminded the village headmen that their role involves safeguarding their communities’ welfare and development. This includes local governance, issue resolution, and liaising with authorities for essential services.

He insisted that the role of a village headman is not merely a title but a responsibility to enhance and improve the lives of their community members.
