A new initiative has been launched by the Veitamani Kava Dealers aimed at improving the livelihood of local farmers by facilitating the sale of kava. The project, introduced by 29-year-old Selemo Banicau from Vusasivo, Natewa, is just several weeks old but has already shown promising progress in connecting dealers with local growers.
Banicau highlighted that the primary goal of this business is to support local farmers, particularly addressing the frequent economic challenges many families face. The Veitamani Kava Dealers operate predominantly in rural areas, including Natewa, as well as neighborhoods such as Dawa, Vusasivo, Nadavaci, and Naqaravatu.
Currently, prices for quality kava range from $10 to $11 per kilogram, which can fluctuate based on quality and demand. The dealers have observed a growing market for kava, with their sales reaching impressive figures of $5,000 to $6,000 per week in locations such as Savusavu.
The initiative has also enabled members of the group to invest in building homes and contributing to other financial projects, including Fiji Holding Unit Trust. However, they do face challenges such as the unfavorable weather conditions affecting kava growth and supply.
Banicau encourages his colleagues not to be discouraged by these difficulties; he emphasizes the potential benefits of establishing cooperative business practices and urges them to seek guidance in developing effective strategies to improve their living conditions. The sense of community and support among growers promises a brighter future for local kava production.
This collaborative effort highlights the resilience of local farmers and their commitment to overcoming challenges together. With innovative approaches and community spirit, there is great potential for sustainable growth and economic empowerment in the region.
In summary, the Veitamani Kava Dealers are making strides to empower local farmers, fostering both economic growth and community solidarity in the face of challenges.
