A notable initiative has emerged from the Veitamani Kava Dealers, who have established a business aimed at supporting local farmers by marketing kava, a traditional beverage in Fiji. This initiative has been highlighted by Selemo Banicau, a 29-year-old from Vusasivo, Natewa, who has been actively involved in the business for only a few months.
Banicau emphasized that the primary goal of their business is to assist local farmers in addressing various immediate challenges they often face, particularly in the sales of their products. The Veitamani Kava Dealers are dedicated to providing a reliable market for kava, which is widely grown in their community.
The dealers are currently sourcing kava from several villages, including Dawa, Vusasivo, and Nadavaci among others. They have noted a growing interest among locals in kava cultivation, which has been hindered by market accessibility. To address this issue, the business offers a streamlined approach to purchasing kava, which can range from $10 to $11 or more per kilo, depending on quality and supply.
Banicau shared that on average, they expect to generate earnings between $5,000 and $6,000 per week through their sales efforts. The revenue has already facilitated significant improvements in their homes and investments in local ventures, such as the Fiji Holding Unit Trust.
However, they also face challenges, particularly with the adverse weather conditions that affect farmers’ crop yields and market stability. Banicau encourages his peers to remain steadfast, pointing to the benefits of collaboration and innovative strategies for sustainable practices in their communities.
This initiative not only boosts local economy but also reflects a hopeful outlook for the future of kava farming in Fiji. As these young entrepreneurs assert their dedication to supporting local farmers, they pave the way for a potential resurgence of the kava market, fostering community resilience and economic stability.
