Kava as a Hidden Threat: Road Safety Reconsidered?

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has questioned the Constitutional Offices Commission secretariat regarding the whereabouts of a resignation letter from Barbara Malimali, who recently stepped down as chair of the Electoral Commission of Fiji. Rabuka emphasized that the Commission should have informed its members about Ms. Malimali’s resignation as a matter of courtesy.

In related news, during the People’s Alliance Party’s assembly in Lautoka, Rabuka discussed the challenges the party faces in fulfilling its 2022 election promises, attributing this to the need to share power with coalition partners rather than having a clear political majority. He expressed interest in running for the 2026 general elections, noting that the decision would ultimately rest with the party members and executives.

In another significant development, Assistant Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office Sakiusa Tubuna has announced that the consumption of kava could significantly contribute to fatal road accidents. Traditionally not associated with road fatalities—often attributed solely to alcohol—Tubuna’s comments have sparked discussion. He pointed out the dulling of senses associated with heavy kava consumption, which may impair rational thought and coordination, ultimately affecting driving abilities.

While there is currently insufficient data linking excessive kava use to road accidents, Tubuna highlighted that some incidents have resulted in fatalities due to heavy kava drinking. He advocated for more awareness and information regarding the impact of kava on road safety, specifically for the iTaukei community.

Maritino Nemani, executive chair of the Accident Compensation Commission Fiji, supported Tubuna’s statements, suggesting that regulations be updated to address excessive kava drinking as a potential factor in road incidents. He pointed out that countries overseas impose fines for reckless driving related to kava consumption, reinforcing the need for a broader understanding of substances that impair driving abilities. The dialogue emphasizes the importance of reevaluating road safety strategies in light of these insights.
