Kava Abuse in Kadavu: Urgent Call for Men to Control Consumption

The excessive consumption of kava in Kadavu is raising significant concerns, as highlighted by Bulou Luisa Duikete, leader of the Kadavu Women’s Association. She pointed out that kava abuse is contributing to the disintegration of families.

“The reality is most men back in the village tend to neglect their families for a bowl of kava,” Ms. Duikete stated. “This has led to financial strain within families, especially if funds are redirected from essential needs and the cost of living.”

According to Ms. Duikete, this situation has forced many women on the island to take on dual roles, managing their households and searching for food.

In response to the issue, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka called on village headmen to take more active roles in their communities. “It’s not our job alone as government to step in and assist every villager; we need your support,” Mr. Rabuka emphasized. “Communal effort is needed to keep our future and identity intact.”

“As the village headman, you are entrusted with ensuring the wellbeing and development of your community,” he continued. “This includes overseeing local governance, resolving disputes, and coordinating with authorities for essential services.”

Mr. Rabuka reminded attendees that the role of a village headman is not merely a title but a serious responsibility to improve the lives of those under their care.
