The increasing abuse of kava consumption in Kadavu has become a serious concern, particularly within families. Bulou Luisa Duikete, leader of the Kadavu Women’s Association, highlighted how excessive kava consumption is contributing to family breakups.
“The reality is most men back in the village tend to neglect their families for a bowl of kava,” said Ms. Duikete. “This has led to financial strain within families, especially if funds are redirected from essential needs and cost of living.”
Ms. Duikete also noted that many women on the island are now shouldering dual responsibilities—taking care of their families and searching for food.
In response to this issue, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka called on village headmen to actively fulfill their roles. “It’s not our job alone as government to step in and assist every villager; we need your support,” Mr. Rabuka said. “A communal effort is needed to keep our future and identity intact.”
“As the village headman, you are entrusted with ensuring the wellbeing and development of your community,” he continued. “This includes overseeing local governance, resolving disputes, and coordinating with authorities for essential services.”
He reminded those present that being a village headman is not just a title but a responsibility to improve the lives of those under their care.
