Kava Abuse in Kadavu Leads to Family Breakdown: Urgent Call for Men to Control Consumption

The excessive consumption of kava in Kadavu has become a significant problem, causing concern in the community. Bulou Luisa Duikete, head of the Kadavu Women’s Association, highlighted the adverse effects of kava abuse, noting its role in family breakdowns.

“Many men in the village neglect their families for a bowl of kava,” Ms. Duikete stated. “This behavior has led to financial strain within families, especially when money is diverted from essential needs and living costs.”

Ms. Duikete further explained that this issue has forced many women on the island to assume dual roles, taking care of their families and searching for food.

In light of this, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka called on village headmen to take a more active role in addressing the problem. “It’s not solely the government’s responsibility to assist every villager; we need your support,” Mr. Rabuka emphasized. “A communal effort is necessary to preserve our future and identity.”

“As village headmen, you are responsible for ensuring the wellbeing and development of your community,” he added. “This includes overseeing local governance, resolving disputes, and coordinating with authorities for essential services.”

Mr. Rabuka reminded those present that being a village headman is not just a title but a commitment to improving the lives of those they serve.
