President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere is anticipated to secure a second term in office by the end of this month. The Parliamentary Business Committee has confirmed that Parliament will convene on October 31 at 11 AM to appoint a new President. Reports suggest that Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has nominated Ratu Wiliame for the position. On October 3, Parliament was originally set to nominate and appoint a President; however, the agenda was postponed after Mr. Rabuka indicated a potential disagreement regarding the presidential nomination. He subsequently asked the Speaker of Parliament, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, to withdraw the item from the agenda, mentioning some “discomfort” surrounding his nomination. The Opposition has yet to disclose their own nomination plans.
